  17. <p>Baxter pleads guilty to complicity with the Arab boycott of
  18. Israel
  19. </p>
  20. <p>     Though it has been against the law since 1977 for American
  21. firms to cooperate with the Arab boycott of Israel, the Clinton
  22. Administration has sent U.S. companies a strong reminder by
  23. levying the first criminal penalty in such a case. Baxter
  24. International, the world's largest hospital supplier, pleaded
  25. guilty to violating provisions of the law that forbids U.S.
  26. companies to provide the Arab League with information about
  27. their dealings with Israel. The U.S. government, which began
  28. investigating the matter three years ago, fined Baxter $500,000
  29. in the case. Baxter will pay an additional $5,959,000 to settle
  30. separate civil proceedings. The company is also proscribed from
  31. doing business with Syria and Saudi Arabia for two years.
